What draws us to the garden — even when we don’t have to grow anything? Hannah Moloney surveyed thousands of people for her new book Why We Garden and found that joy — not food, not climate, not saving money — is what calls us back to the earth, again and again. In this conversation we explore the garden as a place of healing and belonging, the language English doesn’t quite have for feeling held by place, why our cities’ green spaces could be so much more, and how tending living things — in any form, anywhere — is one of the most quietly radical acts available to us.
